The graduate course in IAP has been opened during the first year of the existence of IAP - in 1977. During this time period about 250 persons have graduated from the graduate course. Some former graduate students have become already Cand.of Sci. and Doctors of Sci.; they work as Heads of laboratories and departments.
Up to now the Ministry of Education of RF has licensed 8 specialities at the IAP graduate course, which overlap practically the whole “spectrum” of the studies, performed in IAP:
01.04.03 - radio-physics
01.04.04 - physical electronics
01.04.06 - acoustics
01.04.08 - plasma physics
01.04.21 - laser physics
05.13.18 - mathematical modeling, numerical methods and program packages
05.27.03 - quantum electronics
25.00.29 - physics of atmosphere and hydrosphere
The average amount of graduate students is approximately 40 persons, the annual admission to the graduate course is 12-15 persons. The graduates of the HSGAP and the RPF of the UNN form the greatest part of the graduate course.
The themes of theses papers of graduate students are confirmed at the academic councils of departments, each graduate student has an individual plan according to which he works guided by a scientific supervisor - one of the leading scientists the Institute. The accomplishment of individual plans is monitored by the certifying commission (formed by the academic council of IAP), who annually hears scientific communications of students. The first-year graduate students pass candidate graduate examinations in English and Philosophy, being prepared to them directly in IAP by highly trained teachers, invited from leading Higher Educational Establishments of Nizhnii Novgorod.
The competition of the works of young research fellows is organized annually in IAP, in which graduate students, young scientists not older than 33 years old take part. The competition is held in the form of the discussion of scientific communications of participants. According to the results of the competition, the members of the competent committee award pecuniary premiums.
On the initiative and at active participation of IAP RAS, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Nizhnii Novgorod Region holds annually Scientific Sessions of Young Scientists (seven of them have been already held), in which participate graduate students - competitioners of nominal (academic G.A.Razuvaev) scholarships, instituted by the Administration of the Nizhnii Novgorod Region. At the competition held in 2002, 10 graduate students of the Institute won Razuvaev scholarships. Three graduates were awarded Medals of RAS for Young scientists for the best papers in general physics and scientific instrument-making industry.
Annually based on the results of the research work of graduate students with co-authors about 30 papers are published in reviewed journals. Graduate students take an active part in the work of scientific schools and conferences. The “geography” of the relations of the graduate students of the Institute with foreign scientific institutions broadens: at present 3 graduate students study at the joint graduate course (IAP RAS - the Princeton University, USA), some graduate students work using individual plans in educational institutions of the USA, Germany, France; many graduate students go on long business trips abroad (France, the USA, England, Sweden, Canada), take part in the work of foreign conferences, where they give reports.
Almost all graduate students perform teaching at the faculties of the HSGAP and the RPF of the UNN, conduct lessons at Lyceum N 40 and at summer physical mathematical schools.
