During 15 years IAP RAS has organized the Summer Physical Mathematical School (SPMS) for the pupils of 9th–11 th forms of the Nizhegorod region. The pupils from Ufa and Saratov also take an active part in it lately.

The aim of this project is to search for gifted youth and to draw it to the scientific work. The teachers of SPMS are young collaborators of IAP RAS and the students of higher educational establishments if Nizhnii Nivgorod. The lectures are delivered by research fellows of IAP RAS and other scientific centres of Nizhnii Novgorod. The educational program includes a series of practical works in physics and informatics.

The selection of students to SPMS is performed by competition in the form of testing in physics, mathematics and the humanities followed by an individual interview; the competition is 2–3 students per one place.

Beginning from 2000 the SPMS has been consisted of two sessions:

a June session, which is held at the sanatorium-dispensary of IAP RAS «Varnavino» on thebank of the Vetluga river

The last SPMS terminated its work on June 5. Its participants are pupils of the 10 th and 11 th forms of the Scientific- Educational Center of IAP RAS, and senior pupils invited together with their teachers from the Lyceum of Applied Sciences of Saratov, pupils of the physical-mathematical school N 2 of Dzerzhinsk, Lyceums N 36 and 165 of Nizhnii Novgorod, pupils from Varnavino.

an August session, which is held at the base of the child's recreation center of IAP RAS named after Talalushkin in Zelenyi Gorod.

The session is held in one of the most picturesque places of the Nizhegorod region on the territory of a child's recreation camp of IAP. The school works 3 weeks, a little bit more than 100 children (the pupils of the 9 th -11 th forms) take part in it .
