Based on the resolution of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences N 268 of November 21, 2000, the Scientific-Educational Center (SEC) as a part of IAP RAS was founded in Nizhnii Novgorod. Its main aim is to assist in training highly-qualified specialists and to raise the level of scientific research in various fields of fundamental and applied physics. SEC is to coordinate and develop the educational system of Nizhegorod region (which has been already established), to search for gifted youth and to ensure its continuous (“through”) education, beginning from senior classes of schools of general education and ending with the graduate course of IAP RAS. More than 100 leading collaborators of IAP RAS perfom teaching of students and school children. The economic base of SEC are the base financing, which is received from the Federal budget via RAS, and the target-oriented financing of scientific-educational programs, competitive projects and initiative developments. A new building of IAP RAS was placed into service in August 2003. It accommodates all educational structures of SEC.

To propagandize scientific knowledge for pupils and to arouse their interest in scientific activity, SEC of IAP RAS takes an active part in olympiads. In 2003 the first open olympiad (of the united Educational-Scientific Center of the University of Nizhnii Novgorod (UNN) and academic institutes) titled “Future Investigators” in mathematics and physics for the pupils of Nizhegorod region was held. Having a regional status, this olympiad is planned to become traditional.
